Capable of achieving a maximum bandwidth of 1.6 Gbytes/s, double that of today's PC100 DIMMs, these first Direct Rambus memory modules from the company include 32, 64 and 128 MB densities. The Direct Rambus RIMM, SO-RIMM and C-RIMM modules are expected to play a key role in bringing about new generations of computers and other systems offering greatly revved up performance, as well as reduced system size, lower power consumption, and improved expandability. The industry-standard memory modules employ standard FR04 pc board technology and Direct RDRAM devices that can run at a blistering speed of up to 800 MHz. The modules permit use of multiple channels, with each channel capable of supporting up to 32 RDRAMs. So, for example, by using 256-Mbit devices and repeaters, memory capacity can be extended to a whopping 64 GB. Engineering samples of Rambus modules are available.
