UNH-IOL Launches Test Tools to Optimize Product Development
May 29, 2012. The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), an independent provider of broad-based testing and standards-conformance services for the networking industry, has announced the immediate availability of UNH-IOL Test Tools, a new line of testing tools and services that helps UNH-IOL member and non-member companies speed time to market for multiple products simultaneously by pre-testing in-house. The UNH-IOL provides broad-based flexible testing services to cost-effectively meet network interoperability requirements for the industry; the lab has launched the new UNH-IOL Test Tools line in response to customer demand for one-of-a-kind testing platforms, not otherwise available in the marketplace, developed specifically for use on customer premises.
Supplemental to the services offered through membership in the UNH-IOL’s consortia, the UNH-IOL Test Tool line serves as an additional resource to companies facing aggressive product launch timelines. By utilizing UNH-IOL Test Tools in their own laboratories, companies’ testing, quality-assurance (QA), and development teams have the flexibility to perform testing in accordance with their own product development cycles. Furthermore, internal pre-testing allows companies to identify and resolve issues and improve products in advance of sending their products to the UNH-IOL for official testing or certification. Pre-testing with tools in the UNH-IOL Test Tool line helps companies receive passing reports during the first round of testing at the UNH-IOL, reducing the need for multiple rounds of testing and ultimately shortening product time to market.
Marc Sedam, executive director of the University of New Hampshire’s Office for Research Partnerships and Commercialization (ORPC) said, “Licensing the UNH-IOL’s tools is a natural progression in enhancing the value of UNH-IOL to members through commercialization, expanding the reach of our capabilities into customer facilities. The result is an improved customer relationship, which is what the UNH-IOL is all about.”
The UNH-IOL Test Tools line covers a large spectrum of the UNH-IOL’s collaborative testing programs, offering pre-testing tools in over 20 data networking and storage technologies. Examples include:
• UNH-IOL Intact tests networking protocols,
• Auto-Negotiation Test Tool For Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) tests the handshaking protocol of twisted-pair Ethernet PHY layers,
• Clause 40 Physical Medium Attachment (PMA) Test System tests electrical conformance for 1000BASE-T devices,
• Twisted Pair-Physical Medium Dependent (TP-PMD) Test System tests electrical conformance of 100BASE-TX devices, and
• UNH-IOL Twisted Pair Cabling Passive Line Tap is designed to pick off bi-directional signals on four pair category cable for observation on an oscilloscope with minimal loss and added crosstalk. (Primary applications for line tap usage include 10GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-Tx, Energy Efficient Ethernet.)
