What's Happening at Works With 2022?

Sept. 13, 2022
Silicon Labs' Ross Sabolcik talks about four announcements at the show covering Matter and Amazon Sidewalk.

Silicon Labs' annual Works With 2022 virtual conference is off and running with a number of new announcements and products. I talked with Ross Sabolcik about four announcements at the show covering Matter and Amazon Sidewalk.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance hosts the Matter standard. It's a single protocol designed to bridge an array of protocols and connectivity solutions from Thread to Bluetooth. The Matter 1.0 standard is expected to be finalized this fall. Silicon Labs is showing off its complete Matter development solution, which includes new hardware in addition to software, development tools, and development kits.

The second announcement is about SiLabs and Amazon Sidewalk. The Silicon Labs Pro Kit for Amazon Sidewalk provides support for sub-gigahertz and Bluetooth LE connectivity, and it includes Secure Vault support.

On the hardware side, there's the new FG25 system-on-chip (SoC) plus the EFF01 front-end module (FEM). The SoC supports the Wi-SUN standard that targets interoperable, multivendor solutions. The FG25 is designed to handle sub-gigahertz transmission with a range of up to 3 km even in dense urban environments with no data loss. The FG25 support includes a Wi-SUN Linux Border Router reference design.

Finally, there's Silicon Labs’ first Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE SoC family, the SiWx917. This SoC delivers the lowest power requirements for a Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE combination, according to the company.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
