The TransZorb transient voltage suppressors (TVSs) are 50% thinner than traditional SMA-packaged devices and offer 50% higher surge capability, according to developer Vishay Intertechnology. The SlimSMA DO-221AC package gives the SMA6F series TVSs their 0.95-mm profile. Surge capability extends up to 600 W at 10/1000 µs and 4 kW at 8/20 µs. The company also claims the TransZorb devices have 3% to 9% lower clamping voltages—9.2 to 31.4 at 10/1000 us and 13.4 to 36.8 at 8/20 us—than current SMB-packaged TVSs. Standoff voltages range from 5 V to 20 V. Operating temperature ranges from -55°C to 175°C. Hard disks, hot-swap computer and telecom cards, and slim LCD TVs and monitors are some of the end products that can take advantage of the thin TransZorb TVSs, which protect sensitive electronics against voltage transients induced by inductive load switching and lightning in space-constrained applications.
