The adaptive Just-in-Time compiler in VisualAge Micro Edition Version 1.3 boasts of a new degree of runtime performance in embedded Java application program execution. The technology monitors the interpretive execution of program components, tracking frequency of use and execution length. Frequently referenced program elements are compiled by the virtual machine into native machine code, cached and executed directly on the device platform. The compiler includes several enhancements to component packages: library executables repackaged as shared objects; a new Gateway library configuration for constructing service gateway devices; and the company's preview beta implementation of the Real-Time Extensions for Java Specification extended to most processor platforms supported by the J9 virtual machine. The application also receives improved support from the company's service management framework. Users may download and evaluate the compiler at no charge. at the company's web site. It is also available on CD-ROM for the cost of shipping. The Collaborative Package, adding version, release tools and team repository, costs $99 per developer seat. IBM CORP., Phoenix, AZ.
