Customization can add value to your product, by adding accessories such as a locking hasp, for example, or by giving a major customer pre-drilled mounting holes in a custom configuration. By shifting some manufacturing steps to your supplier, you lower costs. Customization, such as a custom-color powder coat finish, will help differentiate your product in the marketplace. Here's a tale of two competitors who make industrial controls...

Evaluation Boards Key To Updating Engineering And Technology Education
As an adjunct college professor and college textbook author, I keep myself involved with engineering and technology education. I still teach occasionally and attend some of the conferences, visit colleges, and talk to faculty. One thing that I have noticed is that laboratory instruction leaves something to be desired...

Precluding Battery System Failures In Portable Electronics
Dell and Apple have implemented the largest battery pack recalls in the history of portable computing. Catastrophic safety issues--ranging from underperformance to explosions--with portable battery systems has heightened concern over battery system safety. Dr. Troy Hayes, Ph.D., examines the most common causes for dangerous failures in battery systems. Dr. Robin Tichy, Ph.D., provides design guidelines and techniques for power system designers to eliminate these failures in their own portable products. These design guidelines include cell selection & qualification, protection circuit design & placement, battery authentication, charging regimens, mechanical considerations, and battery integration with portable devices. This webinar provides insight into developing portable power systems that are extremely safe and preclude dangerous failures.

While the fight to scale down rages on, semiconductor manufacturers look more to nature for new technologies. \[ Technology Report \]FPGAs Ride Tools Into ASIC Territory
As their on-chip resources and gate count grow, more ASIC-like implementation flows push FPGAs into unlikely applications.\[ Leapfrog: First Look \]LabVIEW Embraces Graphical Object-Oriented Programming
Celebrating 20 years, LabVIEW 8.20 takes a new approach to OOP.\[ Design View/Design Solution \]Switched Fabrics, DDS Boost Distributed Data-Critical Systems
High performance and predictability are prerequisites for any large-scale networked system that depends on real-time data processing and analysis. Data representing actual events or system status must be evaluated while it's still relevant to tactical conditions, making it imperative to know when specific data is available, and to aggregate and evaluate that data in real time. Unreliable receipt times make effective analysis difficult or impossible. Fast and predictable performance...
