The days of gauging bulb brightness from the power consumption figures on the packaging are about to end. A new lighting information label will soon be required on boxes of bulbs. Rather than thinking only in terms of watts, consumers will learn to look at a bulb's lumen quantity (light output), wattage used, and lumens per watt — the true test of a bulb's efficiency. In the meantime, here's a cheat sheet from the DOE that will come in handy when looking for energy efficient equivalents for today's incandescents:

Incandescent bulb wattage Lumen equivalence 100 watt 1,600 lumens 75 watt 1,100 lumens 60 watt 800 lumens 40 watt 450 lumens
