High-Rel MLCCs Have Two New High Temperature Dielectrics

Aug. 11, 2014
AVX Corporation has added high temperature X8R and X8L dielectric components to its high-reliability APS Series multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications.

AVX Corp. has added high temperature X8R and X8L dielectric components to its high-reliability APS Series multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications.  Extensively tested using many of the MIL-STD test methods as used in MIL-PRF-55681, which negates the need for customer-specific drawings, APS Series MLCCs exhibit an ultralow field failure rate of  <1 ppb.  Now available in NP0, X7R, X8R, and X8L dielectrics, in addition to a wider capacitance range than MIL spec parts and a variety of case sizes, voltages, and termination finishes, APS Series surface mount MLCCs satisfy COTS requirements for higher CV demands and PCB space-saving requirements and provide high-reliability performance in a broad range of critical applications, including: military, aviation, and telecommunications.

APS Series MLCCs are available in six case sizes spanning 0603 to 2220, six voltages spanning 16 V to 500V, and capacitance values spanning 10 pF to 22 µF.  They are also available in four dielectrics (NP0, X7R, X8R, and X8L), three capacitance tolerances (±5%, ±10%, and ±20%), and four terminations: plated NiSn, 5% minimum lead, and, for X7R MLCCs, Flexiterm®, which delivers improved thermo-mechanical stress resistance, and Flexiterm with 5% minimum lead.

In addition to the various MIL-STD test methods used to ensure the series' high-reliability <1ppb failure rate, APS Series capacitors are also subjected to AVX's unique, in-house Maverick lot review system, which eliminates infant mortality failures, as well as to thermal shock testing, 85/85 testing, life testing at 125 °C and two times the rated voltage, and 100% visual inspection.  Packaged on 7" or 13" reels, each order comes with a COTS certificate of compliance (C of C).  Lead time for the series is eight to 12 weeks and pricing information for the various part numbers is available upon request.
