RS-485 Transceiver Accelerates Automatic Polarity Correction

Texas Instruments says its new half-duplex RS-485 transceiver offers automatic bus-polarity correction time that’s 80% faster than the competition. When hot-plugged, the SN65HVD888 provides cross-wire immunity by detecting and correcting the bus polarity within 76 ms of bus idling.

The device also features high transient immunity and improved electrostatic-discharge/electrical-fast-transients performance. Its ±12 kV IEC61000-4-2 contact discharge and +4 kV IEC61000-4-4 fast transient burst improves reliability in noisy environments. Low power consumption, thanks to an optimized combination of low quiescent and standby supply current, will gear the transceiver toward battery-powered applications.

The SN65HVD888 comes in a standard 8-pin SOIC package and supports up to 256 nodes on the bus, eliminating the need for repeaters.
