Small Step-Down DC-DC Converter Sustains Up To 17 V
Designed for telecom and computing systems, the Texas Instruments TPS54620 SWIFT single-chip point-of-load device (POL) sustains up to 17 V. As an addition to its other power-management ICs, this 6-A synchronous switcher features integrated FETs. It’s 60% smaller than multi-chip converters, according to TI, takes up less than 195 mm², and is one-fourth the size of a postage stamp.
Using 1.6 MHz, this monolithic dc-dc converter’s input voltage range varies from 4.5 to 17 V. TI believes that both 5 V and 12 V POL designs, like wireless basestations and high-density servers, can work with the TPS54620 because of this feature. TI attributes the converter’s high performance and reliability to its voltage reference with ±1% temperature accuracy.
Besides these elements, the TPS54620 boasts a 95% power conversion efficiency and 25% lower RDS(ON) than older 6-A SWIFT products, says TI. Embedded processors such as deep-submicron TI DSPs, FPGAs, and ASICs work easily with the device, the company claims.
Other characteristics include a power stage input voltage range from 1.6 to 17 V and the support of a 6-A continuous, 8-A peak load current. In addition, the converter combines both 26 mΩ and 19 mΩ—two high-efficiency MOSFETs.
This device is not only space-saving but also thermally enhanced, according to TI. For sensitive data acquisition circuitry, a synchronized switching frequency emitted from a master clock rids the device of beat noise. Finally, TI believes that its IC benefits sequencing with its power-good, enable, and tracking pins.
Offered now from TI, the TPS54620 comes in a 3.5- by 3.5-mm quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. The resale price remains at $1.95 in 1000-unit quantities.
