In support of Japanese digital television broadcasts, the MAX2161 and MAX2162 dual-band, dual-mode tuners receive UHF and VHF band III and handle both 1-segment and 3-segment broadcasts using the ISDB-T standard. The tuners contain all of the blocks required to implement a low-IF TV tuner, except for a crystal and the front-end filters needed to reject interfering cellular-transmit signals. In mobile-TV mode, the devices achieve a maximum sensitivity of -98 dBm with no external filters or amplifiers, and they withstand adjacent analog-TV interference of greater than 50 dBc at a sensitivity of -95 dB. Each device is fully RF tested during production using proprietary technology. The MAX2161 features an I2C-compatible interface, while the MAX2162 has a 3-wire interface for IC-to-IC communication. The devices’ extremely small size enables television systems that meet the tiny-footprint and low-height requirements of the burgeoning Japanese cell-phone-TV market. The MAX2161SEWA/MAX2162SEWA tuners operate from a 2.7-V to 3.3-V supply over the -40°C to 85°C range, and they draw 110 mW (typical) in low-power mode. The devices are available in custom 46-pin wafer level packages (WLPs). In the future, 40-pin TQFN-EP versions (MAX2161ETL and MAX2162ETL) will be made available. Prices start at $4 each/1,000.
