The small footprints of the MAX13485E and MAX13486E half-duplex RS-485 transceivers suit them well for space-constrained applications such as motor control and mobile sensors. The devices measure only 2 by 2 mm, saving more than 50% of the board space needed by other transceivers. The units feature enhanced electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, fail-safe circuitry, and hot-swap capability. The MAX13485E offers ±15-kV ESD protection using the IEC 61000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge Method, and both transceivers provide ±15-kV ESD protection using the Human Body Model.
The MAX13485E’s slew-rate-limited drivers provide reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) and allow operation in environments with high levels of radiated noise, assuring error-free transmission up to 500 kbits/s. The MAX13486E allows data rates up to 16 Mbits/s. Additionally, the transceivers provide a 1/4-unit load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 transceivers on the bus.
The MAX13485E and MAX13486E operate over a −40°C to 85°C range. They come in an eight-pin microDFN or SO package. Prices start at $1.25 for 1000 pieces. A data sheet is available at www.maxim-ic.com/MAX13485E.
