By combining universal serial port (USB), smart card technologies, and a voltage regulator into a single chip, the AU9510 is claimed as the first fully integrated single-chip PC/SC-compliant USB smart card reader controller. The self-contained chip can be used in a stand-alone USB smart card reader or in a variety of embedded USB devices, including keyboards, notebook PCs and monitor/LCD displays.
The chip enables cost-effective networking and Internet security applications on computer and consumer platforms. These applications include log-on security for network/LAN/WAN, individual file encrypting applications, e-commerce, and computer locking. The chip has a built-in 3.3V regulator that draws power from the USB bus so no external power is required.
