In comparison to white LED drivers, the LP5520, LP5521, LP5522, and LP55281 promise better display colors and lower power consumption. Debuting in a 25-bump micro SMD package, the compact LP5520 requires no optical feedback and, reportedly, produces a true white light over a wide temperature range while improving the color gamut from 70% to 100% as per the National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard. When operating in adaptive mode, the device automatically adjusts the output voltage for the lowest possible power consumption. The LP5521, LP5522, and LP55281 provide color-management functions and feature an array of low-power color LED drivers for a range of handheld lighting applications. Prices range from $0.90 to $1.85 each/1,000. NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR CORP., Santa Clara, CA. (800) 272-9959.
