High luminance, virtually independent of ambient temperature, and long life are two of the claims made for a flat, dimmable lamp developed for backlighting industrial and commercial LCD modules, as well as for use in novel lighting applications. The Planon lamp generates light when a voltage is applied to its electrode system, exciting xenon gas in the lampÕs cavity. The resulting short-wave, UV radiation is converted into visible light by a phosphor coating. The innovative new light source reportedly can display high-quality bright pictures with wide viewing and illumination angles and constant luminance from center to edge. The Planon lamp has a life span of up to 100,000 hours, is less than 10 mm thick, and is mercury-free, eliminating the need for warm-up time. Different colors can be supplied.
