Assemblies Brighten Up Large Displays

Aug. 1, 2001

Brightness levels achieved by cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights used in large-format (i.e., 10.4" to 21" diagonal) monitors and LCDs are said to be significantly enhanced with a new backlighting assembly employing MicroLenses. The patented technology increases optical efficiency by molding up to 30,000 MicroLenses/in.2 into the backlight. The new assemblies use a MicroLens backlighting panel into which light extraction features are molded. In addition to maximizing lighting efficiency and lowering cost, the new technology can also reduce the number of optical enhancement films required. Assembly prices range from $18 to $28 each in production quantities for 12.1" to 15" diagonal sizes. GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES INC., Brecksville, OH. (866) 922-4584.
