A new sunlight-readable LCD display system has been designed with surface luminosity of 1,800 nits and a screen diagonal of 12.1". Measuring 1.25" thick, the Phoenix uses backlighting and optical filter systems to yield a high-resolution screen image viewable in bright sunlight. This level of brightness is said to be six times greater than that of a typical high-brightness LCD and 10 times greater than the brightness of a conventional CRT monitor, making it effective for outdoor display applications. The Phoenix can be used for automated teller machines, mobile computing, marine, aviation, test and measurement instrumentation, point-of-information kiosks, and gas pumps. Using dimming control circuitry, the display can be used in a wide range of lighting conditions. Its rugged, lightweight construction makes it suited for outdoor applications or in mobile environments. The backlight system is field serviceable and uses long-life tubes to make it economical.
