A small pico projector developed by STMicroelectronics and bTendo will use two MEMS-based micromirror-actuation devices in the optical engine and an advanced video-processing chip.
Geneva, Switzerland and Kfar Saba, Israel: STMicroelectronics (ST) and microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) sensors company bTendo have signed a development and license agreement to jointly develop the world’s smallest pico projector for smart phones and other portable consumer-electronics devices. The solution is based on bTendo’s Scanning Laser Projection engine technology and ST’s MEMS, video processing, and semiconductor process technology (see the figure).
With advanced smart phones, people carry lots of movie clips and photos, yet find it difficult to share them with others due to the tiny display. Adding projection capabilities into mobile devices will enable users to easily share their media with others—anywhere, on any surface, at any time.
Less than 2.5 cm3 in volume and not even 6 mm tall, the jointly developed embedded projector solution will offer a focus-free image, say the companies. The system will use two MEMS-based micromirror-actuation devices within the optical engine and an advanced video-processing chip.
