Latest SOM Arrivals Underscore Their Versatility

May 16, 2023
Five companies unveiled new system-on-modules that handle tasks ranging from vehicular networking to industrial heavy computing to edge AI processing in severe-condition environments.

A system-on-module (SOM) is a useful device for all sorts of applications across various industries. Developers generally use them for quick and easy low-cost product development. Five companies recently developed new SOMs with varying capabilities and features for different use cases, including industrial automation, smart cities, vehicular networks, robotics, machine vision, and disaster response.

Toradex came out with the Verdin AM62 SOM that can be used with a Linux-based GUI thanks to its four 64-bit Armv8 Cortex-A53 cores. Then we have MicroSys’ evaluation platform, powered by NXP Semiconductors’ S32G399A CP, which is designed for vehicular network connectivity. ASRock’s IoT controller enables quick AI inference and comes bundled with features to support heavy applications. iWave’s iW-Rainbow-G50M achieves machine-learning acceleration capabilities thanks to its Armv8-A architecture extensions. And finally, Lanner’s EAI-I131 device performs intensive AI workloads in harsh environments.
