The Top New SBCs for Midyear 2023

Aug. 22, 2023
The latest single-board computers encompass everything from familiar favorites to eclectic newcomers.

Single-board computers (SBCs) have become a mainstay for project makers and have even moved on to commercial and industrial settings. Before their popularity, microcontrollers were the go-to hardware for enthusiasts looking to create everything from simple robots to handheld video-game platforms. But before those chips could be exploited, they needed to be wired to other components using breadboards, which could quickly turn into a rat’s nest of complexity.

With the dawn of the Raspberry Pi, the days of wiring components are no longer as common as they once were, although the more elaborate projects and R&D still require the use of a breadboard. SBCs have come a long way since their inception, with the latest models packing enough powerful hardware that can rival some PCs and laptops while still maintaining the ability to develop projects.

Similar to smartphones, new boards are introduced by various manufacturers two or three times per year. These can be utilized for almost any project, with some capable of additional applications such as gaming, content streaming, audio and video processing, and more.

Today’s SBCs can also vary in price range, with some costing a few dollars while others climbing upwards of $300 or more depending on the hardware. It will be interesting to see what new boards will be released this year and what engineers and makers have done with the ones already available.

In this roundup, we will look at some of the new boards that have hit the market midyear 2023:
