The MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, developed by MakerBot, a subsidiary of Stratasys Ltd., takes a real-life object, scans it using a camera and two lasers, and creates a 3D digital file. No design or 3D software experience is required. It outputs standard 3D design file formats that can be modified in third-party 3D modeling programs, such as Autodesk’s MeshMixer. The scanner can digitize physical objects up to 8 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall, and up to 6.6 pounds. It’s optimized for, and works seamlessly with, MakerBot’s Replicator Desktop 3D printers and MakerBot Thingiverse (a 100,000-plus-member community for discovering and sharing 3D printable objects).
