Demand for ever-smaller light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that produce highly collimated light led to the development of the PLW138003, Plessey’s tiniest MaGIC (manufactured on GaN-on-Si I/C) LED. The white “dotLED” comes in a 1.0- by 0.5-mm 1005 SMT package, and weighs 0.2 mg with a profile of 0.2 mm (a blue version also is available). It delivers up to 0.7 lumens of white light with a 130° viewing angle from a 5-mA drive current. Future additions to the dotLED family will involve color variants and a series in the larger 1608 footprint. The PLW138003 suits any wearable application with LED content.
