Part of a family of ultra-low power, real-time clocks (RTCs), the EM3027 is reportedly the first RTC with compensated frequency deviation over temperatures from -40°C to +125°C and a temperature sensor with digital readout capability. The clock operates from a supply voltage of 1.3V to 5.5V and its power-management unit automatically detects any supply interruption. An integrated switchover function connects the RTC part to the backup power supply to ensure full data integrity. Additionally, a trickle-charger function guarantees permanent and optimal recharging of the backup capacitor. Users can match trickle-charger characteristics to application needs via an internal programmable resistor. The circuit delivers clock and calendar information with automatic leap year management. Clock output and intervals are also programmable to serve as a time reference to the application. Other features include a programmable alarm function, 2-byte EEPROM and an 8-byte RAM, and a separate 16-bit counter, useable as a counter or a watchdog function.
